No. 24 Mississippi Gulf Coast responded to being walked off with a 10th-inning homer in Tuesday's MACCC opener against Hinds with three long balls in the nightcap to earn a split.
The Bulldogs lost 5-4 on a two-run, two-out homer in the opener but rebounded for an 11-2 victory. The teams played at Trustmark Park in Pearl because of a soggy field in Goodman.
"I thought it built some character," Gulf Coast coach Zach Allen said. "You obviously want that first one, and then to get gut-punched like that on a walk-off home run, we bounced back. I thought it showed a lot about our guys."
Gulf Coast is 16-7 overall, and Hinds is 15-8.
Garrett Gardner (Fr., Madison/Madison-Ridgeland Academy) had a two-run homer and four RBI as part of a 3-for-3 performance.
"He was really locked in," Allen said. "He was spitting on breaking balls when he needed to, and able to get his swing off."
Erimel Rosado (So., Dorado, Puerto Rico/Centennial) and Tripp Lightsey (Fr., Lucedale/George County) also had home runs at spacious Trustmark Park. Rosado had two hits, and Brady Saxton (Fr., Brandon/Northwest Rankin) had three.
Riley Hall (Fr., Mobile, Ala./Faith Academy) scattered five hits, striking out five and allowing two runs in six innings for the win.
In the opener, Alex Love (Fr., Hernando/Northpoint Christian) went 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and two runs before being relieved.
Ben Davis (Fr., Lucedale/George County) had a pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the ninth to tie the score at 3, and Anthony Tanner (Fr., Hurley/East Central) scored on a wild pitch in the 10th for a 4-3 lead before Hinds spoiled the Bulldogs' fun.
Rosado went 4-for-4 with a double.
The Bulldogs will play again on the road Saturday at Holmes visits. First pitch Goodman will be at 2 p.m. The games will be streamed at https://holmesccmedia.com/cardinal-channel/.
