Gulf Coast seeks first road win at Delta

Mississippi Gulf Coast heads to Moorhead on Thursday looking to pick up the first road win of the season.

The Bulldogs (2-3) play Mississippi Delta (1-4) at Jim Randall Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

"You've got the logistics of the travel," Gulf Coast coach Chad Huff said. "You have a tendency as humans to lose your focus, but I think this football team is maturing, growing up. Hopefully, we'll handle ourselves better than the first two road games."

Huff's team will face a very young opponent. The Trojans have 44 true freshmen and only six sophomores on their roster.

Delta has also played four straight games against Top 20 teams, which masks improvements that are visible when watching game film.

"They're very athletic," Huff said. "That's scary when you're playing a bunch of athletes. They're getting better each and every week."

The Bulldogs' Reggio Dean won MACJC Defensive Player of the Week for his inspired performance against Hinds last week. He had seven tackles, one assist, one sack and a 51-yard interception return for touchdown.

That 34-0 victory helped Gulf Coast claw its way back into the MACJC South race. The Bulldogs are in a three-way tie with East Central and Copiah-Lincoln, and all three are 1-1 against each other.

Delta is a non-division opponent, but there are point-differential tiebreakers that could come into play down the line.

"Everything we want, we're right where we need to be," Huff said. "At 2-1, we're tied for first. We've got some games ahead of us that if we continue to progress and get better, we'll play our best football at the end of the season. We're making strides in that direction.
