Gulf Coast aiming for playoff upset

PERKINSTON — The first time Mississippi Gulf Coast faced East Mississippi this season, the ingredients for a victory were there for the Bulldogs.

"I see a lot of missed opportunities and mistakes that they capitalized on," Bulldogs coach Chad Huff said. "We turned the ball over twice inside the 12 with the opportunity to go up 14-0, and blocked a punt that could have put us up 21-0. We had opportunities, and we let them hang around."

Gulf Coast (5-4) will be looking to avenge a 45-7 victory in the second week of the season against a Lions team now ranked No. 3 in the country and riding an eight-game win streak. The first round of the MACJC playoffs start Saturday at 2 p.m. in Scooba.

The game will be streamed at https://livestream.com/BulldogLIVE/MGCCCVSEMCCFOOTBALLPLAYOFFS and you can listen on SuperTalk Mississippi 103.1 FM.

The Bulldogs extended their streak of postseason to a decade by finishing second in the South Division.

"It says a lot about the entire program and the administration and people involved," Huff said. "We're all about excellence in the classroom and on the playing field. Ten years in a row speaks volumes for this college, this administration and the people that work here at Gulf Coast."

Huff sees a Bulldog team that's made big strides since that early disappointment. There's been improvement in all three phases of the game.

"Our kids are playing with confidence," he said. "They know if we play the way we're capable, we can definitely have an opportunity going to Scooba to win this game."
