Tennis splits with Faulkner in 2014 opener
WIGGINS---The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College women's tennis team came out strong in the season opener against Faulkner State Thursday by winnning 6-3 over the Sun Chiefs.
The Lady Bulldogs were led by Brittney Buker, who teamed up with Torri Rose to win at number two doubles 8-2 over Meridith Gwin and Danielle Cleric.
In singles action, Buker took down Gwin 7-6, 6-2 while Annissia Johnson got past Jameka James 1-6, 6-1, (10-3). Ana Pol also recorded a singles win.
In number one doubles Kit Chowdhary and Christa Owen had no trouble rolling past Daviss Cruise and Mackenzia Tobin 8-1.
The men fell to Faulkner 7-2 with Bobby Vo picking up a singles win over Tyler Watts 7-6, 6-4. D'Angelo Vaxter got the other Bulldog victory in a 7-5, 4-6 (10-3) win over Andrew Byerly.
"We showed a lot of improvement from the fall season, especially from our younger players," said Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois. "It's a long season, and if we can stay healthy and continue to improve, we can have a successful year."
