Tennis sweeps past Holmes

GOODMAN---The first road trip for Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College was successful as both men's and women's teams took care of Holmes.

The men's team (1-1) beat Holmes 7-2 and was led by sophomore Josh Johnson and freshman Travous Wiilson. Both players were winners in singles and doubles matches. In number two singles Wilson outlasted Dylan Throgmorton of Holmes 4-6, 6-1, (10-5) while Johnson shut out John Crews of Holmes 6-0, 6-0 at number six singles. Bobby Vo and Tyler Youngblood each also got singles wins for Gulf Coast.

The Bulldog men swept all three doubles matches. Wilson/Johnson teamed up to stop Throgmorton/Godfrey 8-5, Barlow/D'angelo Vaxter took out Langham/Crews 8-5, and Youngblood/Vo got past Jamileh/Wilson 8-6.

"I was really proud of the men's team and the way they came back after the lost to Faulkner State," said Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois. "I thought Josh Johnson and Travous Wilson both really played well in singles and doubles, and some of our freshman are improving with every match and practice. Bobby Vo and Tyler Youngblood are really working well as a doubles team and both are starting to play like veterans in singles."

The Gulf Coast women's team (2-0) was led by Freshman Christa Owen and Sophomore KIt Chowdhary. Both players scored victories in both singles and doubles. Owen cruised past Johnna White of Holmes 6-0, 6-2 while Chowdhary had no issues with Lauriee Alvin 6-1, 6-2.  The Lady bulldogs also got singles wins from Brittney Buker who defeated Anna Clair Shores 6-1, 6-2, and Torri Rose who took down Jennifer Rule 6-3, 6-2. Ana Pol and Annissa Johnson also chalked up wins for Gulf Coast in singles play.

The doubles teams of Owen/Chowdhary, Rose/Buker, and Johnson/Barlow all secured wins for the women's squad.

The next match for Gulf Coast is Thursday at Meridian Community College.
