Tennis heads into meat of schedule

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College women's tennis team sandwiched a loss at Jones with victories over Co-Lin and Northwest last week as the team nears the midway point of the season. The men's squad (5-4) took down Co-Lin but fell 8-1 to Jones and 6-3 to Northwest.

Against Co-Lin Apr. 1, the men's team was led by Bobby Vo and Travous Wilson, with Vo winning his singles match then teaming with Tyler Youngblood to earn a doubles victory. Wilson and Josh Johnson also took singles victories while Matt Barlow and D'angelo Vaxter chalked up the other doubles win.

The women's team swept all three doubles matches and cruised to an 8-1 decision. Christa Owen, Tori Rose, Brittney Buker, Annissia Johnson and Aliesha Barlow all were singles winners while Owen/Kit Chowdhary, Rose/Buker, and Johnson/Barlow all scored doubles wins against Co-Lin.

At Jones Apr. 3, the womens doubles team of Owen/Chowdhary and Bobby Vo were the only winners.

"We lost some tough matches," said Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois. "It wasn't our day. We were in a lot of good matches but couldn't finish them off with victories."

Gulf Coast was back at home Apr. 5 against Northwest and the men's team got off to a bad start by loosing all three doubles matches but rebounded to take three out of six in singles. Bobby Vo, Tyler Youngblood, and Josh Johnson were winners for Gulf Coast.

The women's team swept all three doubles courts and coasted to a 8-1 victory.

I was really proud of the way the women's team bounced back after having a bad outing at Jones," Bourgeois added. "We have the talent to win it all, we just have to believe in our keys to winning that week work on in practice.
