Tennis has mixed results on northern road trip

The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tennis team spent last weekend engrossed in matches against Northeast and Itawamba.

On Apr. 11, the men's squad pulled out an impressive 5-4 win over Northeast as the Bulldogs took two doubles courts and three singles courts. Winning at number one doubles for Travous Wilson and Josh Johnson took and 8-1 victory in number one doubles while Matt Barlow and D'Angelo Vaxter scored a win in number two doubles. Wilson, Vaxter, and Bobby Vo were all straight set winners in singles play. The Lady Bulldogs swept all three doubles courts and won five matches in singles to win 8-1. Christa Owen, Kit Chowdhary, Tori Rose, Brittney Buker, and Annissia Johnson dominated their matches while the doubles teams of Owen/Chowdhary, Buker/Rose, and Barlow/Johnson all scored victories.

On Apr. 12 both teams lost to Itawamba.

"it was a tough women's loss at Itawamba," said Gulf Coast tennis coach Gary Bourgeois. "We won the first set in two cruicial matches but ended up losing two tie breakers. We have to do a better job of staying focused and finishing matches. The MACJC/Regional tournament is right around the corner, so we want to be playing our best tennis this time of year."
