Tennis sweeps two more matches
WIGGINS---The Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College tennis team swept two matches in three days and has now swept three out of four matches to start the 2014 season.
On Feb. 26 Gulf Coast took down Hinds, with the men winning 7-2 and the women rolling to an 8-1 victory. The men's team was led by Matt Barlow and Josh Johnson as both players won both singles and doubles. Also winning in singles for Gulf Coast were Travous Wilson and Tyler Youngblood. In doubles, the teams of Wilson/Johnson, Matt Barlow/D'Angelo Vaxter, and Tyler Youngblood/Bobby Vo were all victorious.
"I was proud of the way our men's team took all three doubles points," said Gulf Coast head coach Gary Bourgeois. "The playing conditions were horrible, but we stayed focused and took care of business."
The women's team looked strong early and won all three double points then continued to dominate the match with wins in five out of six singles matches. Christa Owen, Kit Chowdhary, Tori Rose, Brittany Buker, and Annissia Johnson were all singles winners while the teams of Owen/Chowdhary, Rose/Buker, and Johnson/Aliesha Barlow took doubles victories.
Two days later, the Bulldog men got by East Central 8-1 while the women's team rolled 8-1. Barlow/Vaxter won a key No. 2 double match 8-6 while Youngblood/Vo rolled to an 8-2 win. Travous Wilson, Vo, and Josh Johnson all took home singles wins.
The women's team was led by Christa Owen, who handled Hanna Peoples 6-0, 6-1 at number one singles. Other singles winners were Tori Rose, who outlasted Amber Pierce 7-6, 0-6, 10-6, Brittney Buker who had no problem with Nan Hartness 6-2, 6-0, Annissia Johnson, who took out Hanna Smith 6-1, 6-3, and Aliesha Barlow's 6-1, 6-3 victory over Lauren Peterson. In doubles, Owen/Kit Chowdhary, Rose/Buker, and Barlow/Johnson were all winners.
Gulf Coast gets some rest and practice time before hitting the court again vs. Holmes Mar. 18.
Aliesha Barlow & the Lady Bulldogs are undefeated so far in 2014.
