Gulf Coast trails after 1st round

Mississippi Gulf Coast has some ground to make up if the Bulldogs want to extend their eight-tournament win streak in the MACCC. They are third after the first day of the Northeast Mississippi Fall Invitational, 10 shots back of the hosts, who are leading Monday.

Gulf Coast's Hayden Green is tied for second after shooting 2-under 70 at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club in Corinth. Meridian's Ethan Dyess ran away from the field in the first round with an eye-popping 65.

"We're looking at some bright spots," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Hayden's playing really well right now. That Meridian kid shot 65, and that's just a tremendous round. My hat's off to him. Peyton (Norwood) played OK and shot 75 on a tough golf course like that in the rain and wind."

The weather turned cold about 10 a.m., and it rained for about 90 minutes.

Norwood (So, Jackson Academy/Madison) and Reeves Johnson (Fr, Germantown/Madison) both tied for 11th at 3-over. Chase Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) had an 80 playing as an individual, and Matt Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) and Cade Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) had 81s.

"Anything under par today was really good. It really played tough," Snell said. "Reeves was solid. Matt and Cade had tough days, but they'll come back tomorrow."

The tournament concludes Tuesday with the final round.
