Bulldogs are 10th after 1st round

No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast put three golfers in the top-26 after the first day of the NJCAA Division II Men's Golf Championship, led by Reeves Johnson, who is tied for 10th

Johnson (Fr, Germantown/Madison) shot even-par 72 on the Black Course at Swan Lake Resort in Plymouth, Ind., one shot better than Matt Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) and Chase Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison). They are tied for 19th.

"We've got three players who played well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We struggled and didn't get lucky. We had to count an 85, but the guys were upbeat about it. They said we didn't play our best and we're only 16 shots out. You can make 16 shots up in three rounds."

The Bulldogs are in 10th place with three rounds to play. South Mountain leads at 1-under, and Gulf Coast is only three shots from seventh. The Bulldogs are six shots ahead of Meridian, the other team from Region 23 in the field.

The 72-hole tournament resumes Wednesday morning, with the Bulldogs' first tee time set for 8:33 a.m. CT.
