Gulf Coast wins MACCC preview

Mississippi Gulf Coast claimed a four-shot victory in the MACCC Tournament Preview held Monday at the Wolf Hollow Golf Club in Wesson. 

Hayden Green (So, D'Iberville/Biloxi) shot even-par 72 to lead the Bulldogs in their final competition of the fall. He finished second, three shots back of Southwest Mississippi's Brett Baker.

"We played OK," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "Hayden played really well. Everybody else had some bad holes, double bogeys. We've got to eliminate that."

Green had two birdies and two bogeys, but the other four golfers on the team combined for four double-bogeys and a triple-bogey.

Matt Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) shot 77 to finish fifth, and Reeves Johnson (Fr, Germantown/Madison) was another shot back tied for sixth. 

The Bulldogs finished 21-over. Southwest was third, six shots back, with Hinds another 10 back in fourth.

"It was a great chance to see the course, see how we need to play some holes differently, some holes better. Some holes smarter," Snell said. "It was a learning experience for everybody. A win's a win."

The teams will play the course again for a two-day, regular-season event in early March. The MACCC Tournament will be there in mid-April.
