Bulldogs move up 1 spot in final round

Mississippi Gulf Coast moved up a spot in the standings Tuesday, but couldn't close any ground on the hosts in Corinth. Northeast Mississippi won their MACCC event by shooting a stellar 4-under for the two-day tournament.

The Bulldogs finished 18 shots back in second place. Hayden Green (So, D'Iberville/Biloxi) earned All-Tournament honors by finishing fifth at 2-over par. Meridian's Ethan Dyess held on for a one-shot lead for medalist after finishing 6-under.

"We played better today, but we still didn't put a good round together," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "We just didn't putt well. We missed a lot of makeable putts. It was one of those tournaments where we just didn't putt well. Hayden got off to a rough start, but I was really proud of him for how he fought."

Reeves Johnson (Fr, Germantown/Madison) and Peyton Norwood (So, Jackson Academy/Madison) finished tied for eighth at 4-over, and Matt Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) was one of six golfers Tuesday to shoot in red numbers. His 70 got him to 7-over and tied for 14th.

"Matt came back with a good round today after a horrendous 81 for him yesterday," Snell said. "That's very uncommon for him."

The Bulldogs, who had an eight-tournament winning streak in regular-season MACCC events broken, don't have a lot of time to lick their wounds. They'll be in Raymond for the weekend's Hinds Fall Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, the second MACCC tournament.

"We're definitely motivated," Snell said. "I'm learning the team. I watched them pretty intently today to see what we need to work on. Tomorrow, we're going right back on the golf course. We're going to work on that stuff, and Thursday we're going to work on it. Friday during the practice round (in Raymond) we're going to be more intent. That's what it's all about."
