MGCCC closes out fall schedule Monday

PERKINSTON — The Mississippi Gulf Coast closes out its fall schedule Monday with a one-day MACCC Tournament Preview.

It will give the freshman-laden team a first glimpse of the Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Wesson. Copiah-Lincoln will host this event, plus a regular-season two-day tournament in March before the MACCC Championship in April.

"It's just really a great opportunity for my freshmen to see the course," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "I have a lot of freshmen, and this will get them out there to see what we have to look forward to at the state tournament." 

Hayden Green (So, D'Iberville/Biloxi) and Peyton Norwood (So, Jackson Academy/Madison) are the only sophomores making the trip. Reeves Johnson (Fr, Germantown/Madison), Matt Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) and Chase Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) round out the five-man squad. 

Dawson Thompson (Fr, Pascagoula/Pascagoula) and Cade Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) will play as individuals.

Snell's philosophy has been to let his players play through the fall, making small adjustments and figuring out the bigger steps they need to take. A lot of that will focus on getting more consistent and eliminating big numbers. 

He pointed to the 16th hole at Shiloh Ridge Golf Club in the first MACCC event of the season. During the first round, his team played that hole at 9-over on the way to an 18-shot loss over 36 holes.

"I already know what we need to work on in the offseason and in the spring," Snell said. "We're going to have a busy, busy spring. This is more of a season to just kind of get our feet wet. 

"In the spring, we're going to have to really work hard if we want to compete for the national championship, which I think we can. I think as deep as this team is, the kids are starting to improve, scoring averages are getting lower. I get to work with them, and we'll hit the range more in the spring."
