Bulldogs win at Hinds

A remarkably consistent effort by Mississippi Gulf Coast's top four golfers paved the way for a team win at the Hinds Fall Invitational on Sunday in Raymond. They all shot identical scores on each day to finish tied for fourth, which resulted in a nine-shot win over Northeast Mississippi.

Hayden Green (So, D'Iberville/Biloxi), Reeves Johnson (Fr, Germantown/Madison), Matt Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) and Chase Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison) each shot 3-over 75s in the final round on top of 74s on Saturday.

"After that beatdown up and Northeast, it feels good," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "It's going to be a competitive year. It felt good to be on top."

He called it "weird" that each of them shot 74-75, but the outcome was back to normal after the Bulldogs dropped the first MACCC event of the season last week in Corinth.

Green, Johnson and the Wilkinsons each made the All-Tournament team. Northeast's Brett Baker won medalist by finishing at 2-under.

"They hung in there," Snell said. "It seemed like the back nine we threw some shots away, but a win's a win. They fought hard."

Cade Wilkinson (Fr, Madison Central/Madison), playing as an individual, was tied for ninth at 7-over, and Hayden Russell (Fr, Gautier/Gautier), also as an individual, was tied for 14th. Dawson Thompson (Fr, Pascagoula/Pascagoula) cracked the top 20 with a 13-over.

It was the final full event of the fall semester. The MACCC teams will compete in the tournament championship preview event later this month at Copiah-Lincoln.

"The kids have different things to work on," Snell said. "We have the one-day event left, but I've jotted down some notes on what we need to work on in the offseason.
