#10 MGCCC grinds past Northeast 28-14
BOONEVILLE, MS---A punishing ground attack and a solid defense were enough for 10th ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to push past Northeast 28-14 Thursday Night.
Gulf Coast (4-1, 1-1) won its eighth straight over the Tigers and bounced back after a tough loss last week against Jones.
"I'm pleased that we went on the road and got a big win," said Gulf Coast head coach Steve Campbell. "It was a grind it out type of game, and we stayed resilient all the way to the finish."
Gulf Coast rushed for 325 yards on the night and scored three touchdowns on the ground in the first half en route to a 21-0 halftime lead. Two scores came from quarterback Colton Kane, who rushed for 51 yards on six carries before leaving the game with a shoulder injury late in the second quarter. The other first half touchdown came from sophomore running back Antwon Wells from 9 yards out making the score 14-0 with 4:41 left before halftime. Wells, the MACJC'S leading rusher, carried the ball 32 times for 207 yards on the evening. He also broke loose on a 45 yard run to set up a 13-yard touchdown pass from backup quarterback Terrian Page to Ishmel Morrow making it 28-0 with 11:36 to go in the third quarter. The Bulldogs also won despite only one first down catch for 15 yards from NJCAA All-American wideout Dhaquille Williams.
Northeast (2-3, 2-0) responded with a 64-yard touchdown run by Mitchell Cunningham and a 56-yard TD pass from Jeremy Liggins to Kahlil Stinson to cut the lead to 28-14.

Other than the two scoring plays, the Gulf Coast defense sacked Liggins and fellow Northeast signal caller Jerrard Randall three times and shut down the Tiger offense the rest of the way.
"It makes the long drive home much easier," Campbell added. "This is a tremendous group of young men and I'm pleased with their effort."
Next up for Gulf Coast is a much shorter road trip…the 30 mile run down highway 26 to take on archrival Pearl River at 7pm Oct. 3 in Poplarville.
