No. 3 MGCCC wins first MACJC event
No. 3 Mississippi Gulf Coast coasted to victory Sunday in the first MACJC golf tournament of year, winning by 10 shots over host Copiah-Lincoln in Wesson.
"The kids played well," coach Tommy Snell said. "We struggled a little bit today, but we had a big enough lead. I'm proud of Logan."
Logan Leary (5-11, 120, fr., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.) won medalist honors, finishing at 4-under for the 36-hole tournament. He was part of 1-2-3 finish for the Bulldogs.
"I think it's the start of something good this year," Leary said. "I think you're going to see a lot of low scores from this team."
Jackson Wedgeworth (6-2, fr., West Jones/Soso) was a shot back in second, and Colin Troxler (6-2, 137, so., Hahnville/Luling, La.) also made the All-Tournament team one more stroke back in third.
Wyatt Adkison (5-7, 210, so., East Central/Hurley) tied for 13th along with Jonathon Newman (5-9, 135, so., North Pike/Summit).
Seven of eight Gulf Coast golfers finished in the top 22 of the nine-team, 59-player field.
Colby Entriken (6-0, 160, fr., Hancock/Pass Christian) and Brandon Fontenot (6-7, 130, so., Gulfport/Gulfport) finished tied for 19th at 6-over.
Co-Lin clawed back eight shots from the Bulldogs on Sunday, but a terrific Saturday had created too big a margin to overcome. Four of the golfers on the five-man team finished under par on the way to a 14-under.
It was such a great day they had to throw out an even-par 72.
"We were kind of just cruising," Snell said. "We were never in trouble. It was just one of those rounds where everybody played well."
Gulf Coast returns to action Sunday in the second MACJC event in Southaven.
