Snell named Instructor of the Year
PERKINSTON — Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College golf coach Tommy Snell has been named one of the school's Instructors of the Year.
Snell, who won the award for the Perkinston Campus, has taught English and coached the MGCCC golf team since 2000. He had previously taught English and coached golf at St. John High School in Gulfport. During his teaching career, he has been named HEADWAE Instructor of the Year (2007) and Humanities Instructor of the Year (2014).
His golf teams have been NJCAA Region XXIII champions nine straight years, and he has coached 12 individual national qualifiers and three MACJC Hubert Tucker Award winners. He was named MACJC Coach of the Year seven times and NJCAA Region XXIII Coach of the Year nine times.
At St. John, he coached teams to an unprecedented five straight high school state championship and was named Coach of the Year five times by the Mississippi Association of Coaches.
MGCCC will celebrate the 2017 Instructors of the Year at the annual Spring Reception held Thursday at the Hospitality and Resort Management Center in Biloxi.
The other winners are Tommie Broome from the Jackson County Campus and Andrea Clark from the Jefferson Davis Campus. Each of them received a $1,000 stipend from the MGCCC Foundation for use in teaching and classroom expenses.
MGCCC has honored outstanding instructors with the prestigious Instructor of the Year Award since 1971. The winners are selected based on their academic excellence, dedication and professionalism both inside and outside the classroom.
