Troxler, No. 4 Bulldogs finish second

Mississippi Gulf Coast's Colin Troxler's charge to win MACJC Event #6 fell one putt short, and the No. 4 Bulldogs finished second as a team.

Troxler (So., Hahnville/Luling, La.) tied for the best round of the day with a 2-under 70. He finished 5-under, one behind Copiah-Lincoln's Joseph Dendy.

Gulf Coast, which led by three after the first round, lost by 12 shots to Co-Lin, which is ranked sixth nationally. Fellow No. 4 Meridian finished third, one shot behind MGCCC.

"The greens were just a little rough, and all our guys putt the ball well," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "It just really wasn't a golf course that suited us, but we're not making any excuses. Hats off to Co-Lin."

The Bulldogs placed three players on the All-Tournament Team. Troxler was joined by Wyatt Adkison (So., East Central/Hurley), who finished third at even-par, and Logan Leary (Fr., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.), who was fifth two more shots back. Adkison and Leary were playing as individuals.

The Bulldogs now prepare to defend their MACJC championship. The state tournament is April 9-10 at Wolf Hollow Golf Course in Wesson.

The top five teams there qualify for the NJCAA District D Tournament, which is being hosted by Gulf Coast at Grand Bear Golf Course in Saucier. Five other individuals will also qualify, the three players with the best stroke averages in MACJC tournaments, and the next two at the state tournament.

The top three teams from Grand Bear head to the national championship tournament in Mesa, Ariz., in May.

Gulf Coast had two first-places, three seconds and a third in MACJC events. Snell remains confident, even though the two wins came in the first two events in the fall.

"I like it, believe it or not," he said. "We lost our last two tournaments, but I think we're all hitting the ball well and I think we'll be fine. This isn't the first time this has happened. We'll be ready when conference begins."
