No. 2 MGCCC readies for Meridian tourney

No. 2 Mississippi Gulf Coast finished up its practice round Sunday in Meridian ahead of the two-day MACJC event that starts Monday.

The Bulldogs were planning their rounds around Northwood Country Club.

"We have to figure out which club to hit off the tee before we start the hole," Gulf Coast coach Tommy Snell said. "You can turn around and say, man I wish I'd hit 4-iron off the tee. You have to know that before you tee off."

The Bulldogs won the first two of four MACJC events in the fall, finishing second and third in the others. They're looking to smooth over some bumps that encountered in the spring opener at Faulkner State's tournament last month.

That's what Sunday's practice session stressed, trying to prevent the big numbers that jumped up on a handful of holes that sabotaged the Bulldogs at Fairhope, Ala.

"We're finding the lines off the tees, and what to hit off the tees," Snell said. "It's one of those golf courses you just don't pull driver every hole. It's an old-style course."

Gulf Coast's five-man team includes Jonathon Newman (5-9, 135, so., North Pike/Summit), Colin Troxler (6-2, 137, so., Hahnville/Luling, La.), Colby Blake (5-11, 155, fr., Parklane/Tylertown), Logan Leary (5-11, 120, fr., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.) and Jackson Wedgeworth (6-2, fr., West Jones/Soso).

Wyatt Adkison (5-7, 210, so., East Central/Hurley), Colby Entriken (6-0, 160, fr., Hancock/Pass Christian) and Brandon Fontenot (6-7, 130, so., Gulfport/Gulfport) are participating as individuals.

"Everybody is looking good," Snell said. "They're all confident and feel like they're playing well."
