MGCCC’s Wilkinson finishes fifth at Magnolia Amateur

Mississippi Gulf Coast incoming freshman golfer Brice Wilkinson finished tied for fifth in the prestigious Magnolia Amateur and teamed with Jackson Wedgeworth to lift the Bulldogs to a fifth-place finish on a leaderboard filled with powerful NCAA Division I schools.

The tournament, held at the Hattiesburg Country Club, featured a field of 156 players, with collegiate and mid-amateur divisions. Wilkerson, from Madison Central, shot back-to-back 69s to close out the 54-hole event at 3-under. Only nine golfers finished under par.

Wedgeworth, who went to school at West Jones, shot 4-over.

Ole Miss, which was an NCAA championship qualifier, won the tournament at 3-under. TCU, Houston and Rice tied for second a stroke ahead of Gulf Coast.

The Bulldogs finished ahead of Baylor, a NCAA quarterfinalist, Mississippi State and LSU, among the top 10.

Gulf Coast finished second in this year's NJCAA Division II national championship, led by national champion Colin Troxler. He was competing in the event with the University of Louisiana.
