MGCCC will try to defend title at Grand Bear

PERKINSTON — Last year, Mississippi Gulf Coast did something it had never done by winning its own golf tournament.

Coach Tommy Snell gets a stellar field that includes teams outside the MACJC. This year's event is Monday and Tuesday at Grand Bear Golf Course.

"It was exciting to win last year," he said. "Spring Hill had a great team, and to beat them in a playoff was really good."

The tournament is two events in one. The MACJC teams will be competing in their fourth and final event of the fall, and they will also be pitted against seven teams from out of state.

The overall field includes three community college from Alabama (Central Alabama, Wallace State and Faulkner), two from Georgia (Abraham Baldwin and Andrew) and one from Illinois (Rend Lake), in addition to Spring Hill, a four-year school from Alabama.

"We've got all those good NJCAA Division I colleges coming," Snell said. "We beat all of them except Central Alabama at Wallace State (to open the season), so this will be kind of a litmus test for us to see if we can keep that momentum going. We're really paying well right now."

The Bulldogs continue to play well despite the absence of All-American Colin Troxler (6-2, 137, so., Hahnville/Luling, La.). He's nursing a wrist injury.

Snell's team will be Jackson Wedgeworth (6-2, fr., West Jones/Soso), Wyatt Adkison (5-7, 210, so., East Central/Hurley), Jonathon Newman (5-9, 135, so., North Pike/Summit), Logan Leary (5-11, 120, fr., Gonzales/Dutchtown, La.) and Colby Entriken (6-0, 160, fr., Hancock/Pass Christian).

Brandon Fontenot (6-7, 130, so., Gulfport/Gulfport) and Colby Blake (5-11, 155, fr., Parklane/Tylertown) will play as individuals. Blake shot a 65 last week at Grand Bear but missed on qualifying for the five-man squad.

"I'm excited to have all these teams from different states," Snell said. "It's a testament to how good a course Grand Bear is. The golf course is in just absolutely perfect shape."
