No. 3 Gulf Coast sets sights on 3rd straight win

Mississippi Gulf Coast has won the first two MACJC events of the year, last weekend winning at Southaven despite not having its All-American in the lineup.

Colin Troxler (6-2, 137, so., Hahnville/Luling, La.) is battling an injury and will miss the third MACJC event of the year hosted by Hinds in Raymond. It didn't hurt the third-ranked Bulldogs, who saw Wyatt Adkison (5-7, 210, so., East Central/Hurley) step up and tie for first after 36 holes.

"They played well last week, so I expect them to build on that," Gulf Coast golf coach Tommy Snell said. "The whole team is playing well right now."

One of the biggest challenges his roster of eight golfers face each tournament is just qualifying to make the five-man team. Adkison is guaranteed to make the trip, but has to earn his way on to the team or play as an individual.

That's what happens when all five golfers finish in the top 13 of a 60-player field.

The next two-day, 36-hole tournament starts Saturday. The Eagle Ridge Golf Club the teams will be playing this weekend isn't a long course, but it's not without its challenges.

"It's short, only about 6,500 yards," Snell said. "The greens are really small, so we're focusing on wedges this week."
